The Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Aus. B, also known as the 'King Tiger' or 'Royal Tiger' by Allied troops, was a development of the fearsome Tiger I tank. Officially designated as the SD. Kft 182, this formidable vehicle was introduced to the battlefield in 1944, causing significant problems for the Allies, though ultimately its impact on the war was limited due to its late deployment. Deployed on both the Western and Eastern fronts, the King Tiger's long 8.8cm gun possessed exceptional operational accuracy, capable of knocking out any Allied tank frontally at ranges exceeding 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles), far beyond the effective range of any Allied tank gun.
The first combat use of the King Tiger was during the battles in Normandy by the 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion (s.H. Pz. Abt. 503), opposing Operation Atlantic between Troarn and Demouville on 18 July 1944. On the Eastern Front, its combat debut came on 12 August 1944 by the 501st Heavy Panzer Battalion (s.H. Pz. Abt. 501), resisting the Lvov–Sandomierz offensive, where it attacked the Soviet bridgehead over the Vistula River near Baranów Sandomierski.
Recreating World War II combat on a tabletop using dice, model troops, tanks, and the rules constructed by Bolt Action can be a thrilling experience for one or more opponents. Each opposing side will require painted model troops, representing the soldiers, guns, and tanks of their chosen armies. Tabletop encounters take place according to twelve closely defined battle scenarios that explain how forces are deployed and how victory is achieved. Players must pit their wits against each other as they enact just one small part of one of the greatest conflicts in history—World War II.
The construction and painting of the models, and watching them come to life, are just as much fun as the game itself. Building, painting, and playing with these historical recreations allows enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the strategic and tactical challenges of the war, while also experiencing the joy of creating and commanding their own miniature armies. Whether playing solo or against friends, Bolt Action provides a unique opportunity to explore and relive the pivotal moments of World War II on a personal and interactive level.
